Blue moon is the name used when a second full moon appears in one month; though it will likely look no different than any other full moon, the moon can appear to take on a bluish or even lavender hue especially after forest fires or volcanic eruptions.
Some almanacs and calendars assert that when two full moons occur within a calendar month, the second full moon is called a “blue moon.” Origin of the term
The phrase “once in a blue moon” was first noted in 1824 and refers to occurrences that are uncommon, though not truly rare. Yet, to have two full moons in the same month is not as uncommon as one might think. In fact, it occurs, on average, about every 2.66 years. And in the year 1999, it occurred twice in a span of just three months.
Blue Moon/New Moon
While we’ve assigned the name blue moon to the second full moon of the month, it seems that we have no such name for the second new moon of the month. Nonetheless, these opposing phases seem to be connected with each other. For if two new moons occur within a specific month, then in most cases, four years later, two full moons will also occur in that very same month.
As an example, there were two new moons in August 2008. Now, four years later, August 2012 will be graced with two full moons.
The next time we will see two full moons in a single month comes in July 2015 (July 1 and 31). But if you still have a calendar leftover from last year, check the month of July.
You’ll find that there were two new moons on the 1st and the 30th.
As bookends for August 2012, we have a Leo-Aquarius Full Moon experience on August 1 that places a focus on individual creativity as it pertains to teamwork, group projects, community involvement and global networking. By the end of the month, August 31 offers a Virgo-Pisces solar-lunar rapport that suggests with one-pointed dedication and highly-advanced organizational skills any individual can live a more soulful and compassionate life.
In between these dates, you will want to pay particular attention to Mercury shifting from reverse to direct motion in Leo on August 7. Keep in mind that just because Mercury will be in forward gear during the 24 to 48 hours thereafter doesn’t mean this key planet associated with communication, transportation, business and health will be moving quickly. It will take nearly 10 days for Mercury to move at a similar daily speed as the Sun (about 1 degree of motion per 24 hours) and take about 25 days for Mercury to move twice that fast. The faster Mercury moves each day, the quicker our mental states may be functioning – allowing many earth dwellers to tune into important intellectual and intuitive realms of knowledge.
If you are looking to tune into a wave of optimism, feel a surge of encouragement across the board or rekindle the hope of reaching long-term goals, Saturday August 11 may greet you with some good news since that day presents the monthly Moon-Jupiter zodiacal union in Gemini followed by a Moon-Jupiter parallel and a fairly rare Vesta-Jupiter conjunction. This latter alignment activates many of the Vesta archetypes that include safety and security, insurance rates and coverage, investments, the eternal flame, fellowships and sisterhoods.
A far more complex day is in store for everyone as we reach the Ides of August when the 15th of the month ushers in Venus opposite Pluto and square Uranus while Mars joins forces with Saturn at 25 degrees of Libra. Mars and Saturn only unite about every 2 years on average, and their rendezvous may spark various tests of logic, right action and endurance under pressure. Since there are several other challenging aspects on this date, you will want to circle your calendar for this time and be extra vigilant and alert.
Just two days later, the New Moon in Leo may be just the fiery, assertive boost you need to recharge your artistic and creative batteries. Because the Sun makes an inspirational, 72-degree link to usually benevolent Jupiter on August 17 – while the two days that follow include similar, 72-degree aspects connecting the Sun and Vesta, Ceres and Uranus, as well as Saturn and distant Pluto – there are many golden opportunities to make a great leap forward during this key time-period of the summer.
Quarter Moon phases are some of the most overlooked astrology cycles in terms of significance. Whenever the Sun and Moon lock horns via a 90-degree square pattern, tensions rapidly fill the psychic atmosphere of humanity. The First Quarter Sun-Moon Phase of Friday August 24 is no exception and there may be an added component of confusion, chaos and uncertainty since the annual Sun-Neptune opposition also happens on the same day. Of course, there is always the chance that you can tweak any intense cosmic energy-field in your favor by being extra conscientious, hardworking and determined. Therefore, even a day that sounds discordant can be transformed into a glowing success on the material plane via your perseverance.
Just before the second Full Moon of August occurs, the comet-like body we call Chiron (currently in Pisces) gains prominence during its annual polarity with the Sun in Virgo on August 30 – the same day that Venus forms a powerful, 135-degree aspect with Chiron, a key celestial body associated with holistic healing, alternative medicine, mavericks, keys opening doors to higher consciousness, déjà vu experiences, and twilight zones of strange time and altered consciousness. Learn more about herbs, flower essences, health aids, and oracles like the Tarot, I-Ching and other magical techniques to explore the subtle realms. While Chiron is on center stage, a large number of both discordant and exhilarating alignments will be fighting for supremacy as August morphs into September under the dreamy, visionary auspices of Pisces Moon.
